The FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinals have delivered something the tournament has never produced before: the four highest-ranked teams in the world, all in the final four. France, Argentina, Spain and England, the world’s top four-ranked teams, will decide the trophy between them.
Per ESPN, this marks the first time since FIFA's world rankings began in 1992 that the top four teams have all reached the semifinals of a World Cup. For Indian fans staying up for these matches, it means the two biggest ties of the tournament arrive back to back, with no filler games in between.
France meets Spain in Arlington on July 14. It is a contest between the tournament's most potent attack and its most disciplined defence.
France have outscored opponents 14-2, according to AP, with Ousmane Dembélé on five and Michael Olise leading the tournament with five assists, with Kylian Mbappé on 8 goals, tied with Lionel Messi atop the Golden Boot race. Ousmane Dembélé has added 5, and Michael Olise leads every player at the tournament with 5 assists. France beat Morocco 2-0 in the quarterfinals on July 9, with Mbappé and Dembélé both scoring, as detailed in ESPN's semifinal preview, following their earlier run documented in TUI's France vs Morocco preview.
Spain has conceded just one goal across six matches, that coming in a 2-1 quarterfinal win over Belgium through goals from Fabián Ruiz and Mikel Merino, per NPR. If Spain win the World Cup without conceding another goal, they would set a new record for fewest goals conceded by a champion
Spain also holds a psychological edge here. It beat France 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semifinal, with a then-16-year-old Lamine Yamal on the scoresheet, en route to winning that tournament, ESPN noted. Mbappé's nose was broken during that Euros run, which affected his output at the time.
"Spain coach Luis de la Fuente called France-Spain a possible “World Cup final-before-the-final,” adding that Argentina-England could also carry that weight because all four semifinalists are among the top-ranked teams. Midfielder Rodri added, "France are one of the best teams here, in great form, but so are we."
For many fans, Argentina vs England still carries deep World Cup history, from Diego Maradona in 1986 to the 1998 knockout drama and England’s 2002 group-stage win. A day later in Atlanta, England faces Argentina in a fixture carrying decades of history. Per The Ringer, Argentina eliminated England from the 1986 and 1998 World Cups, while England took revenge in a 2002 group-stage meeting. July 15 will be their first competitive meeting in 24 years, and their first meeting of any kind in 21.
England arrived here on the strength of two players. Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane have scored 6 goals each, accounting for 12 of England's 13 total goals, according to Forbes. Bellingham scored braces against both Mexico in the Round of 16 and Norway in the quarterfinals, the latter a 2-1 extra-time win, as covered in TUI's report on England and Argentina's route to the semifinal.
Argentina's path has been far more chaotic. All three of its knockout games went to extra time or needed a late comeback. Against Egypt in the Round of 16, Messi and Cristian Romero scored in the final four minutes before Enzo Fernández struck the winner in the 93rd minute for a 3-2 victory, ESPN reported, a match previewed earlier by TUI. Argentina then beat Switzerland 3-1 in extra time in the quarterfinals, with Alexis Mac Allister, Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez all scoring, per American Bazaar.
Beyond the rankings, this is also the first semifinal lineup since 1990 made up entirely of former World Cup winners. Spain won in 2010, France in 2018, Argentina in 2022 and England back in 1966, ESPN noted. Whoever lifts the trophy this time will be adding to a list that already has no first-timers left standing.
France and Spain kick off in Arlington on July 14. England and Argentina follow in Atlanta on July 15. Between Mbappé chasing the Golden Boot outright, Spain defending a near-flawless record, and England hunting revenge over Argentina after decades of heartbreak, the next two days will settle who plays for the World Cup. The FIFA World Cup 2026 semifinals now have the kind of heavyweight lineup broadcasters and fans dream of.
