The 15-year-old East Zone vice-captain was spotted during the quarter-final against North East Zone with tape covering part of the number on the back of his white jersey. Only one digit remained clearly visible: 3. The unusual alteration quickly triggered speculation over why the teenager had covered his allotted number. But despite several explanations circulating online, there is still one important fact to keep in mind: no official reason has been given by Sooryavanshi, East Zone or the BCCI. What is established is that No. 3 has become increasingly important to one of Indian cricket’s fastest-rising young players.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Duleep Trophy Jersey: Why Was No. 3 Taped?

The moment came during East Zone’s Duleep Trophy quarter-final against North East Zone, which began at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru on August 23. Sooryavanshi had been named vice-captain of East Zone, deputising for Ishan Kishan in his first appearance in the tournament. When he walked back after being dismissed, television pictures showed tape covering part of the jersey number on his back. The tape had been positioned so that the numeral 3 remained visible.

Some reports have suggested that the wrong number may have been printed and the tape served as a temporary correction. Another theory is that Sooryavanshi specifically wanted his preferred No. 3 displayed. Neither explanation has been officially confirmed. That means the safest conclusion is also the simplest: the jersey was altered, apparently to leave No. 3 visible, but we do not yet know why.

The Number 3 Has a Personal Story Behind It

The speculation did not appear out of nowhere. Sooryavanshi has previously explained why No. 3 matters to him. During India A’s media day ahead of the Rising Stars Asia Cup in November 2025, he said the idea came from his mother. He had earlier worn No. 12. His mother's logic was straightforward: the digits 1 and 2 add up to 3, so he could simply use 3 instead. Sooryavanshi adopted No. 3 at that tournament. The number later became his senior India jersey number when he received his first national-team kit ahead of his 2026 T20I debut. BCCI footage showed him receiving the No. 03 shirt in June. That makes the visible 3 on his Duleep Trophy shirt much more than a random digit.

Was It Simply a Kit Mix-Up?

That remains possible. Several reports have speculated that East Zone may not have had a jersey carrying Sooryavanshi’s preferred number and that tape was used as a quick workaround. But this explanation should remain clearly attributed as speculation. There has been no on-record statement from a team manager, kit official or BCCI representative confirming a printing problem. Likewise, the actual number underneath the tape has not been reliably established. So describing it as “13” or another specific two-digit number would go beyond the evidence currently available.

The Batting Debut Lasted Only Six Balls

The jersey attracted more attention partly because Sooryavanshi’s first innings was extremely brief. Opening for East Zone, he struck Bishworjit Konthoujam for two boundaries before the North East Zone pacer dismissed him. He finished with 8 runs from six balls. His early dismissal did little to hurt East Zone overall. After slipping to 138/5, centuries from Sudip Kumar Gharami and Shahbaz Ahmed helped East Zone reach 467. North East Zone were then bowled out for 111, allowing East Zone to enforce the follow-on.

By August 25, the teenager had found another way to influence his first Duleep Trophy match. Sooryavanshi, who bowls slow left-arm spin, took two wickets in the same over during North East Zone’s second innings. BCCI Domestic highlighted the spell after he dismissed Kishan Lyngdoh and Imliwati Lemtur. He also took two catches. That gave the match a slightly different storyline from his six-ball batting appearance. The taped jersey may have made the viral image, but the 15-year-old was also contributing to East Zone’s push for victory.

What We Still Don’t Know

There are three things current reporting does not establish. We do not know what exact number was originally printed beneath the tape. We do not know whether Sooryavanshi requested the alteration or whether East Zone's support staff made it because of a kit issue. And we have no evidence that BCCI regarded the taped jersey as a violation. That is why the mystery should not be presented as solved. What we can say with confidence is that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi wanted—or at least ended up with—No. 3 being the only visible number during his Duleep Trophy debut.
