Devon Conway will miss New Zealand's opening ODI against India on November 4, 2026, after suffering a concussion during fielding practice at Eden Park in Auckland. New Zealand Cricket confirmed the diagnosis on Tuesday, a day before the India vs New Zealand five-match series begins.
The opener collided with teammate Matt Henry as both attempted an aerial catch. The incident adds to New Zealand's mounting injury concerns, with two other senior batters already unavailable for the series. Losing an experienced top-order player so close to the match leaves the hosts facing an unexpected selection decision.
Both players received immediate medical attention on the field and underwent Head Injury Assessments. Conway was subsequently taken to an Accident and Emergency department, where further examination confirmed a concussion.
According to New Zealand Cricket's official November 3 statement, the injury has ruled him out of Wednesday's first ODI. The board said both players would remain under medical observation, with updates on their availability for the remaining matches to follow. The announcement confirms only his absence from the opening match. His availability for the second ODI in Wellington on November 7 remains uncertain and will depend on his recovery and medical clearance.
Captain Mitchell Santner indicated that wicketkeeper-batter Tim Seifert would probably take the vacant place in the playing XI. However, Seifert was not called into the squad because of Tuesday's collision. New Zealand Cricket had already extended his selection to the entire five-match series on November 2, having initially selected him for the final two ODIs.
Devon Conway is an established top-order batter, making his absence a significant setback even with an experienced replacement available. Santner suggested a direct swap, although the final playing XI will only be confirmed at the toss.
The fast bowler appeared to have come through his initial head-injury assessment, according to Santner, but his availability for the opener remained under review.
Matt Henry was also recovering from a low-grade right quadriceps tear sustained during the T20I series. A New Zealand Cricket update on October 29 had indicated that the injury required approximately one to two weeks of recovery.
Meanwhile, Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman have already been ruled out of the entire New Zealand vs India ODI series because of shoulder and hamstring injuries, respectively.
The latest setback means the hosts must manage another important selection decision immediately before the first match.
The India vs New Zealand first ODI is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at Eden Park in Auckland, beginning at 7:30 am IST (3 pm local time). The New Zealand vs India ODI series follows India's 3–2 victory in the five-match T20I contest. Shubman Gill will captain India, while Santner leads the hosts. For New Zealand, the immediate priority is to finalise the opening combination and assess its available bowling options. Devon Conway remains unavailable for the opener, while Henry's selection and Seifert's final role await confirmation. The India vs New Zealand series now begins with the hosts managing several injuries, and no official timetable has been announced for the injured opener's return.
