What happens when cricket’s 360-degree superstar walks onto a baseball diamond where only a 90-degree slice counts as fair? Mumbai is about to find out.
Major League Baseball is bringing MLBx to India for the first time, with Suryakumar Yadav leading a crossover featuring Indian cricketers, former MLB champions and elite softball athletes. Add music, food and fan experiences, and this is more than a baseball match.
Here’s what you need to know.
MLBx is a modified, co-ed 3-on-3 competition built around home-run hitting and defensive catches. The 3-on-3 baseball format is designed to be quick, simple and high-energy, making it easier for first-time baseball viewers to follow.
Each player gets a two-minute at-bat during a three-inning game, with points for home runs and catches plus bonus opportunities.
It has already appeared at 15 US venues and in London, Seoul and Mexico City. Mumbai is its first Indian stop.
The event is scheduled for October 24, 2026, at Mumbai Football Arena, Andheri Sports Complex.
BookMyShow’s MLBx Mumbai listing lists a 5 PM start, plus live music, food and interactive activations. Tickets were listed from ₹799.
This could be the most fun part of the experiment.
Suryakumar Yadav has made a career out of finding scoring areas other batters rarely attempt. Baseball, however, plays by a very different rulebook. Only a roughly 90-degree wedge in front of the batter is fair territory; a shot outside it becomes a foul ball.
Baseball also uses a round bat, has no cricket-style bounce to read, and gives fielders gloves rather than pads. Its pitching mechanics are different too.
MLB also named him an ambassador in 2026 as part of a wider partnership designed to connect Indian sports fans with baseball.
The latest lineup names six Indian cricketers: Suryakumar Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Jitesh Sharma, Kashvee Gautam, Radha Yadav and Deepak Chahar.
Shardul brings two IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings. Jitesh Sharma was part of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s 2025 IPL-winning squad and India’s 2022 Asian Games gold-medal team. Kashvee Gautam made history as the first Indian woman to take all 10 wickets in a BCCI domestic tournament, including a hat-trick. Radha Yadav was part of India’s 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup-winning squad.
For these Indian cricketers, the challenge is adapting to a different ball, bat, field and defensive setup.
The opposition comes with serious baseball pedigree.
Nick Swisher, a 2009 World Series champion and 2010 MLB All-Star, teams up with Suryakumar. Adrián González, a five-time MLB All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner, joins Jitesh Sharma. Jake Arrieta, the 2015 National League Cy Young Award winner and 2016 World Series champion, pairs with Shardul Thakur. Jonny Gomes, part of Boston’s 2013 World Series-winning team, joins Kashvee Gautam.
The lineup also features stars from the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL). Rachel Garcia is a two-time NFCA National Player of the Year and Olympic silver medallist, while Jordan Woolery was named the 2026 Softball America and Big Ten Player of the Year.
| Team | Players |
| New York Yankees | Nick Swisher, Suryakumar Yadav, Rachel Garcia |
| Los Angeles Dodgers | Adrián González, Jitesh Sharma, Jordan Woolery |
| Chicago Cubs | Jake Arrieta, Shardul Thakur, Radha Yadav |
| Boston Red Sox | Jonny Gomes, Kashvee Gautam, Deepak Chahar |
The latest roster comes from an October 21 Times of India report. These cricket stars are being tested outside their usual game. Earlier official announcements had Radha Yadav and Deepak Chahar yet to be confirmed.
MLBx is being packaged as a full entertainment experience, not just a competition. Badshah and KR$NA are scheduled to perform, while Mumbai-based DJ OG SHEZ will add her genre-blending sound.
The mix gives fans a reason to watch, while music and food turn it into a day-out experience.
This is not MLB’s first India initiative. The league has been building its presence through partnerships, grassroots programmes and media activity. The MLBx event builds on its collaborations with RISE Worldwide and JioStar, as well as Suryakumar’s ambassador partnership.
The Athletes Unlimited Softball League also brings a different athletic style to the crossover. The goal is bigger than one Mumbai event: use familiar sporting faces and entertainment to introduce more Indian audiences to baseball.
The 3-on-3 baseball format also reduces the learning curve, putting power hitting and catches at the centre of the show.
That is the real question.
Cricket and baseball share a bat-and-ball DNA, but their rules, equipment and rhythm are worlds apart. MLBx does not ask Indian audiences to become baseball experts overnight. Instead, it gives them something instantly relatable: famous Indian athletes trying something completely new.
Put Suryakumar Yadav on the diamond, add World Series champions, softball talent, music and a Mumbai crowd, and baseball suddenly has a familiar entry point.
If the event delivers, MLBx Mumbai could become more than a one-day spectacle. It could show Major League Baseball that the best way into India may be to build a bridge through cricket.
