8th Pay Commission: 67% DA Hike in January 2027? Here's What Latest Data Reveals

8th Pay Commission: Why 67% DA From January 2027 Is Still Just a Projection

Latest inflation data raises fresh DA hike expectations.

Central government employees and pensioners are watching a possible 67% Dearness Allowance rate from January 2027. But 67% is still an estimate, not an approved payment. The Union Cabinet has confirmed 63% from July 2026, while newly released September inflation data gives the next revision a clearer, though still incomplete, picture.

The distinction matters for household budgets and expectations around the 8th Pay Commission. A routine inflation-linked allowance increase does not determine a future salary matrix, and there is no official decision calling the January 2027 adjustment the last before new pay rules.

DA Revision July 2026: What Is Officially Confirmed?

On October 28, the Cabinet approved a three-percentage-point increase, raising Dearness Allowance from 60% to 63% of basic pay and Dearness Relief from 60% to 63% of basic pension, effective July 1, 2026, according to the Press Information Bureau.

The decision covers about 48.54 lakh central government employees and 68.71 lakh pensioners, with a combined annual fiscal impact of ₹10,016.10 crore. Eligible recipients are owed the difference for months since July, subject to payment processing. An earlier increase from 58% to 60%, effective January 1, was approved in April. The DA revision July 2026 announcement confirms the existing allowance rate, not a new basic salary. Dearness Relief is the pensioners' corresponding inflation-linked benefit; revisions ordinarily occur twice yearly, using the 7th Pay Commission's accepted formula.

Where the 67% Projection Comes From

The key update arrived on October 30. The Labour Bureau published the September 2026 Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) at 155.5, up from 154.4 in August and 153.2 in July. Older forecasts based only on August data are therefore no longer the latest available estimates.

January 2027's calculation depends on the 12-month CPI-IW average from January through December 2026. Only October, November and December readings remain unpublished. If those readings stay at September's 155.5, an illustrative calculation produces approximately 67.9%, expressed as 67% when the fractional portion is disregarded.

Some previous reports quoted 67.48% using a flat August index, while others cited a provisional 65.05% using data available at the time. Those figures were based on older information and should not be presented as current, confirmed rates. The government has announced no January 2027 DA percentage.

What the 8th Pay Commission Means for Salaries

The new commission, constituted in November 2025, is reviewing pay, pensions and related benefits. Its official website confirms that the process is under way. It has not announced a final fitment factor or a new pay matrix. An 8th pay commission salary hike depends on recommendations the government eventually accepts, not simply on how high DA climbs under the existing structure. Likewise, calls for a DA merger with basic pay must be distinguished from an approved policy: no standalone merger has been announced.

This is also why an 8th pay commission salary hike cannot be calculated by adding a speculative DA percentage directly to a speculative fitment factor. A DA merger with basic pay may feature in employee demands and debate, but the treatment of accumulated DA in a future salary reset has not been finalized.

What Central Government Employees Should Watch Next

The October CPI-IW release is scheduled for November 30, November's for December 31, and December's for January 29, 2027. These updates will complete the inflation series used to assess the next adjustment to Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief.

Until a formal Cabinet announcement, 67% remains a projection. The confirmed rate is 63%, and any future increase depends on inflation data and government approval. The commission's wider pay recommendations are a separate decision, with no verified basis for saying the next DA increase will be the final one.

FAQ

Everything you need to know

What is the current DA rate for central government employees?

DA and DR stand at 63% of basic pay or pension, after the Union Cabinet approved a 3 percentage point hike on October 28, 2026, effective from July 1, 2026, per NDTV Profit.

Is a 67% DA rate confirmed for January 2027?

No. As of October 2026, 67% was a projection based on CPI-IW data, not an approved figure. It depends on CPI-IW readings for September through December 2026 and formal government approval, according to Outlook Money.

Will the January 2027 DA hike be the last before the 8th Pay Commission takes effect?

There is no confirmation of this. DA revisions are separate from the 8th Pay Commission's fitment factor and pay matrix decisions, per NDTV Profit, and no source establishes that any specific DA hike will be the final one before the Commission's new structure is implemented.
