IIT Ropar has signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Army Air Defence College, Gopalpur, allowing eligible Indian Army officers to receive a Master of Technology degree in Defence Technology while undergoing specialised military training.

Under the new arrangement, officers completing the Long Air Defence Course at the Army Air Defence College will receive formal academic accreditation through an MTech programme awarded by IIT Ropar.

The agreement brings together military operational experience and advanced engineering education, giving officers access to IIT faculty, research mentorship and selected laboratory infrastructure.

The initiative also expands a partnership between the institute and the Indian Army that dates back to 2022.

What Has IIT Ropar Signed With the Indian Army?

The new MoA was signed by Prof. Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, and Lt Gen Amit Rao, Commandant of the Army Air Defence College at Gopalpur. Lt Gen Surinder Singh Mahal, Managing Director of the IIT Ropar Defence Research and Innovation Foundation, and Brigadier Rohit Das were also present. The agreement was coordinated by Dr Sarang Gumfekar, Dean of Postgraduate Studies and Research at the institute, along with Virbhadra Singh Rawat, Director of the Defence Research and Innovation Foundation. At its core, the agreement converts part of the Army's advanced professional military training into a formally accredited postgraduate academic pathway.

Who Will Receive the MTech Degree?

The programme is specifically meant for Indian Army officers undergoing the Long Air Defence Course at the Army Air Defence College, Gopalpur. These officers will be able to earn an MTech degree in Defence Technology from IIT Ropar after fulfilling the academic requirements attached to the programme. This distinction is important. The agreement does not mean that the MTech has been opened as a conventional public admissions programme for all engineering graduates. Instead, it is an institutional collaboration designed around serving Army officers already undergoing specialised air-defence training.

What Will Army Officers Study?

The public announcement does not provide a complete semester-by-semester curriculum. However, the agreement confirms that officers will work on research projects and dissertations with academic support from IIT faculty. Faculty members from the institute will be nominated as mentors to guide officers through their dissertation and research work. It builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2022 between IIT Ropar and the Army Training Command under the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army). That earlier agreement focused on academic and research cooperation. The institute subsequently established a Centre of Excellence for Studies and Applied Research in Defence and Security.

IIT Ropar's Board of Governors said the centre was intended to become a nodal organisation supporting the training and research-and-development needs of the armed forces. The new MTech arrangement takes that relationship further by adding a formal postgraduate qualification for officers.

Officers Will Get Access to IIT Ropar Labs

Another important part of the arrangement is access to research infrastructure. Army officers enrolled through the programme can use institute laboratories and facilities where appropriate and after obtaining approval.
