UPI Lite is NPCI's offline-capable variant of UPI, designed for low-value transactions under Rs 2,000. It debuted in 2022 as a pilot and has since expanded to 14 banks. Here's what to know.
You preload up to Rs 4,000 on your bank app's UPI Lite wallet. Transactions then debit instantly from the on-device wallet, with no PIN and no network roundtrip required. The Reserve Bank of India raised the per-transaction cap to Rs 1,000 in March 2026.
By the end of 2026, over 100 million Indians will have UPI Lite enabled by default on at least one banking app. The default-on rollout is being staggered through the year.
UPI Lite is single-bank - you cannot link multiple accounts. Refunds take 24 hours, not instant. And it is not yet supported by all merchant POS terminals.
