IMD red alert: Delhi heatwave to peak at 46°C through Friday

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Delhi NCR on Wednesday, warning that maximum temperatures will hit 46°C by Friday afternoon. The current spell is the longest unbroken heatwave the capital has seen since June 2024.

What the alert means

A red alert is the IMD's highest warning category. Schools have been told to advance summer break to Thursday. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority opened 200 cooling centres on Wednesday morning.

What to do

Authorities advise avoiding outdoor activity between 11am and 4pm. ORS and water-stations are open at all major Metro hubs. For latest updates check the TUI weather desk.
