Prashant Kishor has won his first election as a candidate, defeating the BJP in Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly bypoll. The Jan Suraaj Party founder received 64,151 votes, while BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar secured 44,827. Kishor won by 19,324 votes and captured 49.23% of all votes counted, according to the Election Commission of India.

The victory gives the Jan Suraaj Party its first seat in the Bihar Assembly. It also ends the BJP’s roughly three-decade dominance over Bankipur and the electoral territory that preceded the present constituency.

Why the Bankipur Assembly Constituency Was Vacant

The bypoll was held after BJP national president Nitin Nabin resigned as Bankipur MLA following his election to the Rajya Sabha.

Nabin had represented the seat since the Bankipur Assembly constituency was created in its current form in 2010. Before him, his father, Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha, had also represented the area. The constituency was therefore considered one of the BJP’s strongest urban seats in Bihar.

Prashant Kishor Led Throughout the Count

Kishor’s victory did not come from a late swing. He remained ahead through the counting process and finished with 64,117 electronic voting-machine votes and 34 postal votes. Neeraj Kumar received 44,794 EVM votes and 33 postal votes. The Election Commission completed all 32 rounds of counting before publishing the final result.

The final result gave Kishor a lead of 19,324 votes.

Official Bankipur Bypoll Result

The Election Commission recorded the leading candidates as:

• -Prashant Kishor, Jan Suraaj Party: 64,151 votes
• -Neeraj Kumar, BJP: 44,827 votes
• -Rekha Kumari, RJD: 14,273 votes
• -Manoranjan Kumar Shrivastava, Pragatisheel Janta Party: 973 votes
• -NOTA: 646 votes

Kishor received 49.23% of the vote, compared with 34.4% for the BJP and 10.95% for the RJD. These official numbers should replace the different vote totals, candidate names and counting-round figures appearing in some early reports.

RJD Finishes a Distant Third

RJD candidate Rekha Kumari received 14,273 votes. That left her more than 30,000 votes behind the BJP candidate and nearly 50,000 behind Kishor. The result shows that the main contest developed between Jan Suraaj and the BJP, rather than becoming a close three-way race. The result is notable in a state where the RJD remains one of the principal established political parties. However, a single urban bypoll cannot by itself establish a statewide shift in voting patterns.

Why the Result Matters for Jan Suraaj Party

The victory gives Prashant Kishor a direct role inside the Bihar Assembly after years of working as an election strategist for other political parties. It also gives Jan Suraaj a recovery point after the party failed to win a seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly election. Kishor had campaigned for the party during that election but did not contest himself. 

He later entered the Bankipur bypoll and described the contest as a test of whether his political movement could challenge both the BJP-led alliance and the RJD-led opposition. Winning a BJP stronghold provides Jan Suraaj with a concrete electoral result. It does not yet prove that the party can reproduce the performance across rural Bihar or in a statewide election.

What the Defeat Means for the BJP

The result is a significant setback for the BJP because Bankipur had remained under its control for decades. The party also faced disruption during the campaign. It initially selected Abhishek Kumar Sinha but replaced him with Neeraj Kumar shortly after the original nominee filed his papers and withdrew for what were described as family reasons.

BJP leaders will now examine whether the defeat resulted from candidate selection, low voter turnout, local dissatisfaction, support for Kishor or a combination of factors.

The turnout was 34.3%, down from 41.45% in the previous Assembly election. Low turnout can affect bypoll outcomes, but the available figures do not establish that it alone caused the BJP’s defeat.

What Happens Next

The Bankipur win sends Prashant Kishor to the Bihar Assembly and gives his party its first legislator in the state. The larger political test will be whether the Jan Suraaj Party can build a durable organisation beyond one Patna constituency and turn Kishor’s personal victory into broader support.

For now, the result is clear: Kishor won his electoral debut with 64,151 votes and ended the BJP’s long hold over Bankipur. It is an important breakthrough for Jan Suraaj, but its statewide significance will depend on what the party achieves in future elections.
