An eSIM is a digital SIM that lets you activate a mobile connection without inserting a physical SIM card. Your operator’s profile is downloaded onto a secure chip built into the phone.
That shift matters for anyone buying a phone in India this year. Carriers are pushing eSIM hard, newer flagships are built around it, and the switch itself involves a waiting period that can leave you without SMS access, including OTPs, for a full day. Here's what to expect before you make the switch.
Physically, an eSIM lives on an eUICC chip soldered inside your phone. Instead of swapping a card when you change networks, you just change the software profile in your settings, per Wikipedia's definition. Depending on the phone, you may be able to save several operator profiles and switch between them through the device settings. However, only one or two mobile lines may remain active at the same time. An eSIM also reduces the risk of physical SIM theft, although it does not eliminate SIM-swap fraud or account-security risks.
eSIM adoption is growing in India as more premium smartphones and smartwatches support the technology. Most recent flagship phones from Apple, Samsung and Google offer eSIM support, although availability still depends on the model and mobile operator.
Every eSIM-capable phone has a 32-digit EID, or Embedded Identity Document, that your carrier needs during activation. Dial *#06# or check your device settings to find it, according to Vi's official guide. Copy it carefully. Entering an incorrect EID can cause the activation request to fail or delay the process.
Open the MyJio app and use the available eSIM activation option. Confirm your registered email address, enter the device EID and complete the verification steps shown in the app. per Jio's official process. Jio applies a two-hour cooling period before the eSIM request can move forward. Continue using the existing SIM until the new profile has been installed successfully.
Start the request through Airtel’s current eSIM activation process. You may need to confirm your registered email address, approve the request through SMS or a consent call, and scan the QR code sent by Airtel. Check the operator’s latest instructions before starting, as the process may change.
On Vi, open the app, go to Help, and raise a service request to "Activate eSIM." Enter your EID, verify with an OTP, and you'll get a QR code by email, per Vi's activation guide. The time required may vary by device, network and verification status. Keep the physical SIM active until the eSIM profile has been downloaded and connected successfully. You will need a compatible phone, the correct EID and a stable Wi-Fi connection to download the Vi eSIM profile.
Mobile operators may restrict incoming and outgoing SMS, including OTPs, for up to 24 hours after an eSIM conversion or SIM change. Calls and mobile data may start working earlier, but the exact restriction depends on the operator and activation process. Calls and data usually work fine. But if you're expecting a banking OTP or a delivery code, plan around it. Keep the physical SIM active until the eSIM is fully connected. Complete urgent banking logins beforehand, update alternative recovery methods where possible and avoid switching on a day when you expect important OTPs.
Coverage has gaps. Vi lists eSIM as currently unavailable in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, the Northeast states, and Assam. Device support remains uneven. Many recent iPhones, Samsung Galaxy flagships and Google Pixel models support eSIM, but compatibility varies by model, region and software version. Check the manufacturer’s specifications before starting the switch.
None of this makes eSIM optional for long. As more phones ship without a SIM tray at all, the paperwork-heavy activation process is likely to be the biggest hurdle standing between Indian users and an all-digital SIM, not the technology itself.
Everything you need to know
An eSIM is a digital SIM embedded as software onto a chip already inside your phone, so you don't need to insert or swap a physical SIM card, according to Wikipedia's technical entry on eSIM.
Jio requires a 2-hour DoT cooling period before download, plus about 2 more hours to activate. Airtel activates within 2 hours of profile download. Vi's profile is typically ready to download within 15 minutes, per each carrier's official process.
Government regulation bars incoming and outgoing SMS, including OTPs, for 24 hours after eSIM activation completes on Jio, Airtel and Vi, according to Airtel's official eSIM page. Keeping your old physical SIM active during the configuration window helps avoid being cut off.
