Those qualities have continued to influence his approach to coaching. That philosophy is not dramatically different from the environment Fleming and Dhoni cultivated at CSK. The real change may therefore be tactical rather than cultural.

MS Dhoni Connection Could Help Zaheer's Transition

Zaheer's relationship with MS Dhoni is another intriguing element of the appointment. The two played together extensively for India, including during the victorious 2011 ODI World Cup campaign. Hindustan Times reported that Dhoni was given responsibility for helping identify Fleming's successor and strongly supported the idea of appointing an Indian coach.

Dhoni had also publicly praised Zaheer during their playing days, once describing him in exceptionally high terms because of his tactical intelligence and importance to India's bowling attack.

If Dhoni remains involved with CSK's cricketing setup, that existing mutual understanding could make the coaching transition smoother. Zaheer will nevertheless need clear authority. The new coaching structure will work best if the responsibilities of the coach, captain, Dhoni and senior management are clearly defined.

A stronger Indian pace group would also allow CSK greater flexibility with their overseas selections. That could make this less of a complete rebuild and more of an evolution.

What Will Be Zaheer Khan's Biggest Challenge?

The biggest challenge will be balancing continuity with change. Zaheer Khan is joining a franchise with five IPL championships, an enormous fan base and deeply established methods.

But he is also taking over after disappointing recent seasons. There will therefore be pressure to produce visible change quickly. CSK need to become more aggressive without becoming reckless, younger without discarding valuable experience, and tactically modern without losing the calm environment that helped produce years of success.

Zaheer's experience as both an elite player and cricket administrator gives him a strong foundation. Whether that translates into success as a full-time IPL coach remains to be seen.
