Chennai Super Kings are searching for a new head coach ahead of IPL 2027, and the debate is quickly becoming about more than simply finding a replacement for Stephen Fleming. Former England captain Eoin Morgan has emerged as one of the names being discussed. But former India captain Kris Srikkanth believes CSK already has a better option inside its own dressing room: batting coach Michael Hussey. Behind both arguments sits an even bigger question — what role will MS Dhoni have in Chennai Super Kings going forward?
That matters because whoever takes over from Fleming will inherit a franchise entering one of its biggest transitions in years. CSK must prepare for the next auction, rebuild after another season outside the playoffs and decide how much influence Dhoni will retain in the team's cricketing decisions.
Fleming's departure ended one of the longest and most successful coaching partnerships in IPL history. CSK officially announced on July 13 that Fleming and the franchise had mutually agreed to part ways. He first joined Chennai as a player in 2008 and became head coach in 2009. Under his coaching, the franchise won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. Fleming has since been appointed England's men's Test head coach, leaving Chennai to appoint a new full-time leader for the first time in 17 years. The question now is whether Chennai wants continuity or a completely different voice.
Ravichandran Ashwin brought Morgan firmly into the conversation while discussing Chennai's coaching search on his YouTube channel. Ashwin said he had a “strong hunch” that Morgan's name was strongly linked to the position and suggested a decision could be made within a week. He also mentioned Andrew Flintoff and Brendon McCullum as names that had circulated. That does not mean Morgan has been offered the job. There has been no announcement from Chennai confirming negotiations or identifying him as the official frontrunner. For now, Morgan remains a reported possibility backed most prominently by Ashwin's comments.
He would also represent a major change. Morgan captained England to their first men's ODI World Cup title in 2019 and played a major role in transforming the team's white-ball approach. But he has never worked as a head coach at international or franchise level. Since retiring from professional cricket, he has largely worked in broadcasting and commentary.
That lack of coaching experience is exactly where Srikkanth's objection begins.
Kris Srikkanth has rejected both Morgan and McCullum as possible choices and argued that Chennai should promote from within. His preferred candidate is Michael Hussey.
Hussey already serves as CSK's batting coach and has spent years within the franchise as both a player and member of the support staff. Srikkanth described him as the “automatic” choice and said Chennai does not need to look outside when it already has someone who understands its system.
His argument is essentially about continuity. Hussey already knows Ruturaj Gaikwad, the support staff, younger players and the culture Fleming helped build. Morgan, by comparison, would enter the franchise without previous head-coaching experience. But Srikkanth also added an important condition: Chennai must first decide what happens with Dhoni.
This may ultimately be more important than whether Morgan or Hussey gets the job. Srikkanth said Chennai should first “fix” the arrangement around MS Dhoni before finalising its next coach. Only then, he argued, would the rest of the structure fall into place. Ashwin has made a similar point. Soon after Fleming's departure, he said there would be no better person to become Chennai's coach than Dhoni if the five-time IPL-winning captain wanted the position. Ashwin also noted that any incoming coach would have to work in an environment where Dhoni remains an influential figure in squad discussions. Dhoni's position is particularly interesting after IPL 2026. A calf injury initially ruled him out of the opening weeks, and he ultimately missed the entire season. That meant Chennai played every IPL 2026 match without the player who had been at the centre of its identity since the league began. There has been no official announcement confirming whether he will return as a player for IPL 2027.
The franchise itself has offered little indication about who will get the job. CSK managing director Kasi Viswanathan said the franchise had received calls from several interested candidates and would sit down before finalising the appointment. Reports also say Viswanathan and whole-time director Rupa Gurunath are expected to consult Dhoni and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad before making the final decision. An overseas coaching appointment has been described as likely, although no candidate has been officially named. That means the Morgan-versus-Hussey discussion remains exactly that: a debate rather than a confirmed shortlist.
The new coach will arrive at an important point in Chennai's rebuilding cycle. CSK missed the playoffs again in IPL 2026, despite investing heavily in younger players. The franchise now has another opportunity to reshape its squad before the IPL 2027 mini-auction. That makes the coaching appointment relevant to player trades and retention decisions. Ashwin has argued that Chennai should appoint its coach before making major trade calls because the incoming coach may have different views about which players should be retained or moved. The next coach therefore will not simply inherit Fleming's seat. He will help determine what the next version of Chennai Super Kings looks like.
Ashwin made his Morgan prediction on August 12 and suggested a decision could arrive within a week. As of August 17, that window has not yet expired, and CSK has made no official coaching announcement. For now, three possibilities dominate the discussion. Morgan represents a fresh outside voice. Hussey represents continuity from within. Dhoni represents the deepest connection to the culture that made Chennai successful in the first place. Before Chennai chooses between those paths, Srikkanth's question may be the one that matters most: what exactly does Dhoni want his place in the franchise to be? Once that is clear, CSK's next coaching era may become much easier to define.
Everything you need to know
Ravichandran Ashwin has said on his YouTube channel that Eoin Morgan has emerged as the leading contender, per reports by The Indian Express and Amar Ujala, though CSK has made no official confirmation.
Srikkanth told NDTV Sports that CSK don't need an outsider when they already have Michael Hussey, their current batting coach, on staff, and that Hussey should be the automatic choice.
Ashwin told News18 that CSK's search is complicated by uncertainty over whether Dhoni himself would be willing to formally take on the head coach role, which he believes would be the best outcome.
