When One Actor’s Victory Became Another Actor’s Comparison

The moment Vijay became the Tamil Nadu chief minister, the internet did what it usually does best — it started comparing. This time, the comparison was not only about cinema, fan bases or box office numbers. It moved straight into politics.

Then there was Vijay, the Tamil superstar, who, after getting into politics, went on to establishing Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam and eventually became the ruling chief of Tamil Nadu. On the other side was Pawan Kalyan, who is Telugu and the founder and deputy chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in the party named, Jana Sena. Needless to say, it prompted all the questions among the fans as to why one actor is a chief minister and others have opted for a political career.

Pawan came up with that question.

Talking to the cadres of Jana Sena in the Mangalagiri party office, Pawan reacted to the plentiful comparison on social media. Not naming Vijay outright, he said that it was not just he, but others were pressuring him as well, ever since the Tamil Nadu election result and the actor becoming chief minister. Many had sent him messages about how an actor in the neighbouring state had started a party and become the chief minister and why couldn't he do the same in Andhra Pradesh, he said. It was not a response of anger. This felt more like a reminder that all states, all elections, and all political journeys have their own tales. "Don't compare Andhra with Tamil Nadu," says Pawan's message

The crux of the matter was something Pawan knew very well—Andhra Pradesh politics and Tamil Nadu politics are two different things. Pawan used a Telugu idiom to describe the situation. He compared it to people getting too excited at a neighbor's wedding, forgetting that it is not their own house. It was a sharp way of saying one state’s political story cannot simply be copied into another. That line actually explains the whole debate. Tamil Nadu politics and Andhra Pradesh politics do not work the same way. The voter mood, party structure, history of cinema in politics, local equations, and political space are different. A formula that works in one state may not work next door. Pawan also reminded of the 2019 elections to his supporters. But he said he challenged then, and the support network “was not robust.” Politically, he said, he was not assisted even by the ministers; therefore, people should not equate his journey to that of anybody else

The reasons why Vijay's rise came such as a talking point

It is the Vijay hype making headlines, as Tamil Nadu politics has come a long way with cinema making inroads into the public sphere. The state has witnessed film personalities turning to become powerful politicians from MGR to Jayalalithaa. But not any actor can follow the same journey; Tamil Nadu voters are already aware of the concept of an actor becoming a public leader. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam of Vijay effected a big change in the state. He was reportedly sworn in as chief minister on 10th May 2026 after his party became the single largest party and was able to garner support to form the government. His ascendancy was viewed as historic as he became the first leader, other than the traditional Dravidian parties, DMK and AIADMK, to rule Tamil Nadu from 1967 up to now.

It was for this reason that the comparison with Pawan swayed many people. These are both large stars. Established substantial emotional followings. They both ran on a message of idealism when entering the political arena. The need for both to make people realize they were not just actors seeking power but leaders seeking change. However, they were on varying paths.

Chiranjeevi’s Warm Call Added More Attention

The comparison got louder due to the other emotional moment—when Chiranjeevi called Vijay on the phone. Chiranjeevi confirmed that the megastar had a ‘cordial' talk with Vijay since taking office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Chiranjeevi congratulated him and hoped he would continue to be a part of the hearts of people of Tamil Nadu under the banner of people centric governance. He also had a desire that Vijay be made popular like the late MGR. That message carried weight because Chiranjeevi himself is one of Telugu cinema’s biggest names and also had a political journey of his own. His call was not just a celebrity congratulation. It connected cinema, politics and South Indian public life in one moment.

Vijay also reportedly thanked Chiranjeevi and said he had watched Chiranjeevi’s recent film Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu. He also thanked him for support during the piracy issue linked to Jana Nayagan, Vijay’s delayed final film. So while Pawan was asking people not to compare blindly, Chiranjeevi’s call showed another side of the story — respect across industries and political journeys.

Why Fans Keep Comparing Film Stars in Politics

The reason these comparisons happen is obvious. In South India, cinema is not just entertainment. It is emotion, identity and sometimes even political capital. Fans do not see stars only as performers. They often see them as symbols. A hero who fights injustice on screen can easily be imagined as someone who might fight for people in real life too. That emotional bridge has helped several actors enter politics. But the problem begins when fans expect every star-politician to follow the same timeline. One actor may win quickly. Another may struggle for years. One may build a party from scratch. Another may enter an alliance. One may become chief minister. Another may become a Deputy Chief Minister or influence government from a different position. That does not make one journey smaller than the other. Pawan’s political path has been long and difficult. Vijay’s rise has now created a fresh benchmark in Tamil Nadu. But comparing them only by position ignores the different battles they fought.

The Bigger Meaning of This Comparison

The Pawan Kalyan, Vijay, and Tamil Nadu chief minister conversation is not just gossip. It tells us something important about the way people now see film stars in politics. Voters are willing to take actors seriously, but only when the political groundwork feels real. Fans can create buzz, but they cannot replace organisation. Stardom can open the door, but governance requires patience, teams and trust. Pawan’s response showed that he understands this difference. He did not dismiss Vijay’s achievement. He simply asked people not to turn another state’s result into pressure on him. That is a fair point. Because politics is not a movie release where two stars can be compared by opening-day numbers. It is a long game, and every state writes its own script.
