Aadhaar is a unique identity number that was launched in January 2009. The data for Aadhaar is collected by the UIDAI, which is a statutory authority body established by the Government of India. The body comes under the jurisdiction of the Union ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY).

1. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) recently warned that "not all 12-digit numbers are Aadhaar."
2. Also, in recent days, several cases of fraud, involving the Aadhaar, have been busted in different parts of the country.
3. In the tweet, the Aadhaar issuing authority said, “All 12-digit numbers are not Aadhaar. It is recommended that the Aadhaar should be verified before accepting it as identity proof. Click: https://resident.uidai.gov.in/verify and verify it online in 2 simple steps.”

4. Step-by-step guide to check whether Aadhaar card number is genuine or fake:
Step 1: Go to the official Aadhaar website i.e. https://resident.uidai.gov.in/offlineaadhaar. Now, select 'Aadhaar Verify' services.
Step 2: Now, you will be required to enter the Aadhaar number or Virtual ID(VID).
Step 3: Mention the Security Code on the screen and click on Send OTP. You can also opt to enter TOTP(hash-based message verification code).
Step 4: You will receive an OTP on your registered mobile number for the given Aadhaar number or VID.
Step 5: A new page will open where you will get the message stating your Aadhaar number if your Aadhaar number is correct.
Step 6: Your name, state, age, gender will also be reflected below. If all these specifics are displayed on your screen, this means that your Aadhaar card number is genuine.

As per UIDAI, an individual can verify the email address and mobile number declared at the time of enrolment or during the latest Aadhaar update. If you want to avail the online services of Aadhaar, then you must have a registered mobile number. If your mobile number is not registered with the Aadhaar, then you can visit the nearest Permanent Aadhaar Centre (PAC).
