What does it take to go from feeling uncomfortable in front of your own camera to confidently standing beneath a national pageant spotlight?

For Kaziah Liz Mejo, the answer lies in years of preparation, performance and learning to believe in herself. The 19-year-old from Mavelikkara, Kerala, has made history after being crowned Miss Universe India 2026 at the grand finale in Jaipur on August 23.

Kaziah is the first woman from Kerala to win the national title. She will now represent India at the 75th Miss Universe competition in Puerto Rico in November.

But her story goes far beyond a pageant crown. She is a law student, classical dancer, actor and model who has already represented India on an international pageant stage. She has also spoken openly about the insecurities she faced while growing up.

So, who is Kaziah Liz Mejo? Here are seven things that make her journey worth knowing.

1. Her Roots Are in Kerala, But She Grew Up in Abu Dhabi

Kaziah Liz Mejo is from Mavelikkara in Kerala, although she spent much of her childhood in Abu Dhabi. She studied at Emirates National School, St Joseph's School and Abu Dhabi Indian School. She is currently pursuing law alongside her modelling and pageant career.

Her connection to Kerala makes this victory particularly significant. Kaziah is being reported as the first woman from the state to win the Miss Universe India title.

Her journey from Mavelikkara to the national crown also reflects a modern Indian story - one shaped by roots at home and experiences abroad.

2. She Is a Law Student With a Life Beyond Pageantry

The Miss Universe India 2026 winner is not building her future around pageantry alone.

Kaziah is pursuing law while developing her career in modelling and entertainment. Her official Miss Teen Diva profile also highlights her ambition to pursue law alongside modelling and acting.

That makes her profile more interesting than the usual beauty-pageant introduction.

She is balancing academics with performance. She has also developed interests in public speaking and communication.

For Kaziah, the crown is one part of a much larger identity.

3. She Has Spent 12 Years Training in Classical Dance

Long before the pageant stage became her biggest platform, Kaziah was learning the discipline of performance.

According to her official pageant profile, she has trained in classical dance for 12 years. She can also sing and play the drums and violin. Her profile also notes her acting experience in the Malayalam film Shylock.

That background matters when we look at her winning answer.

Kaziah has spent years learning how to perform, communicate and hold an audience's attention. The stage was not a new environment for her when she entered the Miss Universe India competition.

It was already a familiar part of her life.

4. Before the Crown Came a Very Personal Battle With Confidence

Perhaps the most relatable part of Kaziah's journey is that confidence did not always come naturally to her.

In a June 2026 interview with The New Indian Express, she spoke candidly about feeling insecure about her appearance and personality. She recalled a time when she did not have a single unfiltered photograph of herself.

Instead of allowing those insecurities to define her, she decided to work on herself.

She focused on her communication, personality and appearance. She also described using a “fake it till you make it” approach - convincing herself that she was confident enough to walk onto a stage until that confidence gradually became genuine.

That makes her journey relatable.

Confidence is often treated as something people either have or lack. Kaziah's story suggests it can also be built through deliberate effort.

The girl who once struggled with her own image eventually learned to stand comfortably in the spotlight.

5. Harnaaz Sandhu's Victory Sparked Her Own Pageant Dream

Kaziah's interest in pageantry was inspired by another Indian Miss Universe winner.

She has said that watching Harnaaz Sandhu win Miss Universe in 2021 sparked her interest in pageantry. She was not deeply familiar with the competition at the time, but seeing India win the global crown made her curious about the world of pageants.

She eventually began competing herself.

Kaziah won Miss Teen Diva 2024 and later represented India at Miss Teen International 2025, where she finished as the first runner-up. The official Miss Teen Diva profile confirms her 2024 title, while contemporary coverage records her international runner-up finish.

She then won Miss Universe Kerala 2026 before taking the national title in Jaipur.

The progression is worth noting.

Inspiration led to participation. Participation led to experience. Experience eventually led to the crown.

6. Her Winning Answer Turned “Silence” Into a Story About Belonging

The most talked-about moment from the finale came with an unusual question:

“Can you describe the sound of silence in your life?”

Kaziah took a deeply personal approach.

She described silence as the calm she feels just before walking onto a stage. She spoke about being raised around stages as a classical dancer and actor and eventually falling in love with the spotlight, microphone and performance.

For her, silence is the moment when she feels at home.

She described it as the point when her heart allows her to take a deeper breath, her pulse settles and she knows that she belongs.

Then she connected that feeling to the very stage on which she was standing.

That is what made the answer memorable.

For Kaziah, silence was not about the absence of sound. It was about calm, belonging and certainty.

Her Idea of Beauty Goes Beyond Appearance

Kaziah has also spoken about what beauty and confidence mean to her.

In a video shared by the Miss Universe India pageant, she described true beauty through conviction and courage. She spoke about rising again, believing before becoming and turning fear, failure and weakness into strength.

That philosophy adds another layer to her victory.

The crown may be visible. The work behind it is not.

7. The National Crown Is Only the Beginning

Kaziah as Miss Universe India 2026 winner now has a much bigger stage ahead with the 75th Miss Universe pageant being held at Puerto Rico in November 2026.

Her national victory came at Zee Studios in Jaipur, where she was crowned by outgoing titleholder Manika Vishwakarma.

Tamil Nadu's Vaishnavi Gannesh finished first runner-up and was also named Miss International India 2026. Gujarat's Anushri Satavlekar finished second runner-up. Tejaswini Shrivastava and Anubha Vashist Chaudhary were the third and fourth runners-up respectively.

The finale jury was led by Sushmita Sen, India's first Miss Universe, with former titleholders and other personalities from the pageant, entertainment and professional worlds also on the panel.

India has previously produced three Miss Universe winners:

  • Sushmita Sen - 1994
  • Lara Dutta - 2000
  • Harnaaz Sandhu – 2021

Kaziah now has the opportunity to chase India's fourth global crown.

What Makes Kaziah Liz Mejo's Story Different?

It would be easy to look at Kaziah's victory and see another pageant crown.

Look a little closer, though, and there is a different story.

She is a young woman from Kerala who grew up in Abu Dhabi, chose law alongside modelling, spent 12 years training in classical dance, explored acting, experienced the disappointment of finishing second internationally and openly confronted her own insecurities.

Most importantly, she learned to believe that she belonged on the stage.

That makes her Miss Universe India 2026 victory more than a glamorous headline. It is the latest chapter in a journey that began with a dream inspired by Harnaaz Sandhu and has now taken Kaziah to the threshold of the world's biggest pageant stage.

In November, Puerto Rico will bring the next challenge as she gears to represent India at the 75th Miss Universe pageant.

For now, the girl from Mavelikkara has earned her moment in the spotlight.

And perhaps her own words describe that moment best: sometimes, knowing you belong can be the quietest - and most powerful - feeling of all.
