What does it take to go from feeling uncomfortable in front of your own camera to confidently standing beneath a national pageant spotlight?

For Kaziah Liz Mejo, the answer lies in years of preparation, performance and learning to believe in herself. The 19-year-old from Mavelikkara, Kerala, has made history after being crowned Miss Universe India 2026 at the grand finale in Jaipur on August 23.

Kaziah is the first woman from Kerala to win the national title. She will now represent India at the 75th Miss Universe competition in Puerto Rico in November. 

But her story goes far beyond a pageant crown. She is a law student, classical dancer, actor and model who has already represented India on an international pageant stage. She has also spoken openly about the insecurities she faced while growing up.

1. Her Roots Are in Kerala, But She Grew Up in Abu Dhabi

Kaziah Liz Mejo is from Mavelikkara in Kerala, although she spent much of her childhood in Abu Dhabi. She studied at Emirates National School, St Joseph's School and Abu Dhabi Indian School. She is currently pursuing law alongside her modelling and pageant career. 

Her connection to Kerala makes this victory particularly significant. Kaziah is being reported as the first woman from the state to win the Miss Universe India title.

Her journey from Mavelikkara to the national crown also reflects a modern Indian story - one shaped by roots at home and experiences abroad.

2. She Is a Law Student With a Life Beyond Pageantry

She eventually began competing herself.

She then won Miss Universe Kerala 2026 before taking the national title in Jaipur.

The most talked-about moment from the finale came with an unusual question:

“Can you describe the sound of silence in your life?”

Kaziah took a deeply personal approach.

She described silence as the calm she feels just before walking onto a stage. She spoke about being raised around stages as a classical dancer and actor and eventually falling in love with the spotlight, microphone and performance.

7. The National Crown Is Only the Beginning

Kaziah as Miss Universe India 2026 winner now has a much bigger stage ahead with the 75th Miss Universe pageant being held at Puerto Rico in November 2026. 

Her national victory came at Zee Studios in Jaipur, where she was crowned by outgoing titleholder Manika Vishwakarma.

Tamil Nadu's Vaishnavi Gannesh finished first runner-up and was also named Miss International India 2026. Gujarat's Anushri Satavlekar finished second runner-up. Tejaswini Shrivastava and Anubha Vashist Chaudhary were the third and fourth runners-up respectively. 

The finale jury was led by Sushmita Sen, India's first Miss Universe, with former titleholders and other personalities from the pageant, entertainment and professional worlds also on the panel. 

India has previously produced three Miss Universe winners:

• Lara Dutta - 2000
• Harnaaz Sandhu – 2021

Kaziah now has the opportunity to chase India's fourth global crown.

What Makes Kaziah Liz Mejo's Story Different?

It would be easy to look at Kaziah's victory and see another pageant crown.
