Tim Cook's last day as Apple CEO was August 31, 2026. After nearly three decades at the company and 15 years running it, he handed the job to John Ternus, Apple's longtime hardware chief, in a transition the company had been planning for months.
For a company that sells more phones in India each year than almost anywhere outside China and the US, the change at the top matters beyond Cupertino. Apple is entering the transition still playing catch-up in AI, and the person now steering product decisions comes from hardware, not software or services.
Tim Cook joined Apple in 1998 and took over as CEO in 2011, succeeding Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, according to Apple Newsroom. Over that time, Apple launched or scaled products including the Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro, alongside services like iCloud, Apple Pay, Apple TV and Apple Music.
On August 31, his final day as chief executive, Cook posted a farewell note to the Apple community. "Sending lots of love to the Apple community on my last day as CEO," he wrote, adding, "My title changes tomorrow, but the love I have for the Apple community never will."
He becomes executive chairman of Apple's board from September 1, 2026. Arthur Levinson, who had been non-executive chairman, moves to the role of chief independent director on the same date, per Apple's announcement.
Apple first announced the succession plan on April 20, 2026, saying Ternus would become CEO effective September 1. He joined Apple's product design team back in 2001, rose to vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013, and joined the executive team in 2021 as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, according to Apple's official statement. He also joins Apple's board from September 1.
Reuters reported that the board approved the move after a long-term succession planning process, and that Cook stayed on as CEO through the summer to work closely with Ternus on the handover.
In his community letter the day the plan was announced, Cook framed it as continuity rather than departure. "This is not goodbye," he wrote. "It's a hello to John and I can't wait for you to get to know him like I do!"
The timing is not incidental of . Reuters noted on September 1 that Tim Cook is passing control to Ternus at a moment when Apple is trying to close the gap in the AI race, an area where rivals have moved faster on generative features baked into phones and software.
Ternus's background is squarely in devices, not algorithms. That raises a real question for Apple watchers: does a hardware engineer at the helm mean sharper, more ambitious device design even as AI reshapes what a smartphone or headset needs to do? Apple has not spelled out a strategy shift, but the choice of successor signals where the company's institutional strength still lies.
Tim Cook's exit as Apple CEO closes one of the more stable stretches in Big Tech leadership. He steered Apple's market value through supply chain shocks, antitrust scrutiny in multiple global markets including India, and the launch of an entirely new product category in Vision Pro. Whether Ternus can match that run, or pivot Apple harder into AI, is now his to answer, starting with whatever Apple unveils next.
