Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey opened to $264.1 million worldwide, giving the filmmaker the biggest global debut of his career in unadjusted dollars.
The result matters because The Odyssey is not a superhero sequel or an established film franchise. It is a nearly three-hour, R-rated adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic. Yet it opened like one of Hollywood’s largest franchise releases.
Universal Pictures reported that the film earned $124.5 million in the United States and Canada and another $139.6 million from international markets during its opening weekend.

The accurate conclusion is therefore clear: The Odyssey has delivered Nolan’s biggest worldwide opening in unadjusted dollars, but not his largest inflation-adjusted debut.
India Delivers Nolan’s Biggest Opening Weekend
The Odyssey also recorded Christopher Nolan’s biggest opening weekend in India, based on early trade estimates.
Sacnilk estimated that the film collected:
Day 1: ₹17.40 crore net
Day 2: ₹22 crore net
Day 3: ₹21.90 crore net
That brought its three-day total to approximately ₹61.30 crore net and ₹73.19 crore gross.
Collections grew by 26.4% on Saturday before remaining almost flat on Sunday. That pattern suggests the film did not depend only on first-day excitement. It maintained demand across the weekend despite its long runtime and adult certification.
The Indian performance also reflects Nolan’s strength among urban audiences. Premium multiplexes, IMAX screens and the English-language version accounted for a major share of demand, according to trade reporting cited by the Times of India.
Premium formats played a major role in the opening.
The Associated Press reported that IMAX screenings generated $81.4 million worldwide. That represents almost 31% of the film’s total global opening.
In North America, about half of all viewers selected a premium format. IMAX alone accounted for 23% of the domestic opening, according to Reuters.
Universal’s official film website says Nolan shot every frame with IMAX film cameras. In theatres equipped for IMAX 70mm, the movie uses the expanded 1.43:1 aspect ratio designed to fill the taller screen.
That distinction matters. Audiences were not only buying tickets to watch a new film. Many were paying higher prices to experience a specific theatrical format.
The release therefore worked more like a live cultural event than a routine Hollywood opening.
Christopher Nolan Has Become the Franchise
The film’s success also points to Nolan’s unusual position in Hollywood.
According to reporting by The Wall Street Journal, 53% of surveyed North American viewers identified Nolan as their main reason for buying a ticket. That suggests the director’s name carried more weight than the source material or any individual cast member.
This is significant because The Odyssey does not carry the built-in familiarity of Batman, Marvel or Star Wars. Homer’s poem is famous, but it has not operated as a modern blockbuster film franchise.
Nolan himself supplied that familiarity.
His previous film, Oppenheimer, won Best Picture and Best Director and earned more than $975 million worldwide. That success expanded the audience willing to follow him into another long, adult-oriented historical spectacle.
The Cast and Reviews Helped Sustain Interest

The Associated Press reported an A CinemaScore and a 95% Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score during the opening weekend. Reuters reported that its Rotten Tomatoes audience score stood at 97%. Scores can change as more reviews arrive.
Rotten Tomatoes’ published consensus praised the scale of the production, its ensemble and its ability to give the ancient story an emotional centre.
Strong reviews do not guarantee a long theatrical run. They do, however, reduce the risk of the film collapsing immediately after a curiosity-driven opening.
A $264.1 Million Opening Does Not Mean the Film Is Profitable Yet
The global total also needs financial context.
The film reportedly cost $250 million to produce. The Associated Press separately reported a marketing campaign of about $125 million.
A worldwide gross is not the same as studio revenue. Cinemas retain a portion of ticket sales, while distribution and marketing expenses sit outside the production budget.
The opening therefore confirms strong demand. It does not confirm that the film has already recovered every cost.
Its final financial result will depend on weekday stability, the second-weekend decline and how long premium screens continue to attract audiences.
What Comes Next for The Odyssey Box Office?
The next weekend will show whether The Odyssey has genuine staying power.
Its strong reviews, premium-format demand and broad international opening give it a solid base. The film also has a relatively clear runway before Spider-Man: Brand New Day arrives on July 31, according to the Associated Press.
The billion-dollar discussion will become more credible only after the first full week and second weekend. For now, any final-total prediction remains speculative.
What is already confirmed is more important.
