Samay Raina turned an official Maharashtra government cyber-awareness event into an unexpected callback to one of the most controversial periods of his career. The comedian was felicitated by CM Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai on August 26, 2026, during the launch of the trailer for Operation 1930, a Maharashtra Cyber awareness film focused on digital-arrest scams, along with the 1930 Cyber Anthem.

But when Raina took the microphone, he did not avoid his history with the agency organising the event. He joked that his relationship with Maharashtra Cyber went back a long way—a clear reference to the India’s Got Latent controversy, during which Maharashtra Cyber had registered a case and questioned him in 2025. The moment quickly went viral because of the contrast: Raina had previously appeared before Maharashtra Cyber as part of an investigation. This time, he was standing at a Maharashtra Cyber event receiving a felicitation from the state's Chief Minister.

Why CM Devendra Fadnavis Felicitated Samay Raina

The August 26 programme was not centred specifically on Raina. It was part of Maharashtra Cyber's wider campaign to educate people about online fraud, particularly so-called digital arrest scams, in which fraudsters impersonate police officers, CBI personnel, judges or other authorities and frighten victims into transferring money. At Sahyadri Guest House in Mumbai, CM Devendra Fadnavis unveiled the trailer for the 42-minute awareness film Operation 1930 and launched the 1930 Cyber Anthem.

Actors Ashish Vidyarthi, Pankaj Tripathi, Sonali Bendre and Mangesh Desai, singer Sunidhi Chauhan and comedian Samay Raina were among those present. Sharad Kelkar and Javed Jaffrey were specifically identified as Maharashtra Cyber brand ambassadors. Reports based on the event said several of the entertainers had contributed to the awareness film or anthem and were felicitated for their involvement. That means Raina should be described as a participant and contributor to the campaign, rather than its sole or principal face.

Samay Raina Brings Up the India’s Got Latent Controversy Himself

Raina made sure the irony did not go unnoticed.

While thanking Fadnavis for the felicitation, he joked that his association with Maharashtra Cyber was an old one.

He then praised how active the agency was, joking that its officers could find someone whether they were in India or abroad.

The comedian also referred to an earlier occasion when a cyber official came to his home, contrasting that experience with being honoured this time.

The remark drew laughter from the audience, including Fadnavis.

Rather than trying to erase the India’s Got Latent controversy, Raina effectively made it part of the joke.

Why the Number 1930 Became Part of the Punchline

Raina also turned the campaign's most important public-service message into comedy. The number 1930 is India's national helpline for reporting financial cyber fraud. Raina joked that it was a “great number” and that he already had it saved because of how often he had dealt with Maharashtra Cyber. Behind the joke was a serious message. Fadnavis told citizens that if they become victims of cyber fraud, the first few hours can be crucial. Reporting the incident immediately through 1930 can improve the possibility of freezing or recovering money before fraudsters move it through additional accounts.

He also stressed that there is no legitimate concept of a police or court-imposed “digital arrest” conducted through a video call. Fraudsters use fear, fake allegations and impersonation to convince victims otherwise.

What Happened to Samay Raina During the India’s Got Latent Row?

The context behind Raina's joke dates to February 2025. Maharashtra Cyber registered an FIR against Raina, podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia and others after controversy erupted over content aired on Raina's YouTube show India’s Got Latent. The Maharashtra Cyber case invoked Section 67 of the Information Technology Act relating to transmission of obscene material electronically, among other provisions, according to Indian Express reporting at the time.

Raina subsequently appeared before Maharashtra Cyber officials in Mumbai on March 28, 2025, for questioning. Authorities had also recorded statements from several other people linked to the programme. That history explains why the August 26 felicitation produced such an immediate reaction online. The agency and comedian already had a very public connection—just under completely different circumstances.

Supreme Court Gave Samay Raina Relief Earlier This Month

There is another piece of context that makes the timing notable. On August 14, 2026, less than two weeks before the Maharashtra Cyber event, the Supreme Court quashed criminal proceedings against Raina and four other comedians arising from insensitive remarks concerning persons with disabilities. The Court took note of subsequent efforts by the comedians to organise awareness initiatives and raise funds for people with disabilities, including those affected by spinal muscular atrophy. It appreciated what it described as constructive efforts before closing the criminal proceedings against those respondents.

However, this should be described carefully. The India’s Got Latent controversy produced different complaints and legal proceedings based on different remarks. The Supreme Court's August 14 order concerned the disability-related proceedings, so it should not automatically be described as wiping out every legal issue ever connected with the programme.

From Maharashtra Cyber Investigation to Maharashtra Cyber Felicitation

The visual contrast remains striking even without overstating it. In March 2025, Samay Raina was appearing before Maharashtra Cyber for questioning. In August 2026, he was appearing at a Maharashtra Cyber awareness programme and receiving a felicitation from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. That does not necessarily amount to an official declaration that the state has “reconciled” with him. Nor has Maharashtra Cyber said it selected him specifically because of his earlier controversy. But Raina's willingness to acknowledge that history from the stage gave the event a layer that none of the other celebrity appearances carried.

Why Samay Raina’s Moment Went Viral

Raina was not the only celebrity felicitated. But his presence came with an obvious backstory. The India’s Got Latent controversy had once placed the comedian and Maharashtra Cyber on opposite sides of an investigation. Now he was using that exact relationship to deliver one of the event's most memorable endorsements of the 1930 helpline. Rather than presenting the moment as proof that everything associated with the controversy has been forgotten, it is more accurate to describe it as an unusual reversal in public optics.
