One colour. One saree. One unforgettable entrance.
Nita Ambani turned heads in a deep crimson saree at Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla’s 40th anniversary celebration in Mumbai on September 6. But beyond the glamour, the evening celebrated something bigger: four decades of Indian couture, craftsmanship and a creative partnership that began in 1986.
That context makes the look particularly interesting. At a gathering filled with celebrities and elaborate couture, the rich crimson ensemble stood out through a simple combination of colour, texture, embroidery and carefully chosen diamonds.
The centrepiece was a deep crimson red saree with a richly textured finish. Its six-yard drape featured geometric detailing along the border and pallu, giving the saturated colour depth without making the outfit feel excessively embellished.
She paired it with a matching full-sleeved blouse covered in intricate patterned embroidery. The tonal combination created one continuous silhouette, allowing the fabric and craftsmanship to remain the focus.
The styling also offers an easy lesson in festive dressing. A strong colour does not necessarily need several competing elements. When texture, embroidery and silhouette are doing enough work, restraint can make the final look more impactful.
The jewellery Nita Ambani wore followed the same balanced approach to compliment the attire. A delicate red-thread necklace with a diamond pendant was paired with diamond-and-gemstone drop earrings. A statement ring added another sparkle, while a distinctive diamond ear cuff brought a contemporary touch to the otherwise classic styling.
This is where statement jewellery can work particularly well. Instead of competing with the saree, the diamonds create small points of light against the deep crimson base.
The beauty look stayed equally polished. Soft, voluminous waves were swept over one shoulder, complemented by defined eyes, warm-toned blush and a glossy nude-pink lip. A classic red bindi completed the look.
The takeaway is simple: statement jewellery does not always mean piling on heavy pieces. Sometimes, one carefully selected detail can provide all the contrast an outfit needs.
Red has always had a place in Indian festive dressing. It carries associations with celebrations, weddings and traditional glamour.
But a deeper crimson shade creates a more sophisticated evening mood. The textured fabric keeps the colour from looking flat, while the geometric embroidery adds definition to the drape.
The monochromatic approach also deserves attention. Keeping the saree and blouse within the same colour family allows smaller details to stand out. The embroidery becomes easier to notice. The diamonds catch the light more sharply. Even the red bindi becomes part of the larger visual story.
For anyone taking festive fashion inspiration from the evening, the lesson is useful: choose one dominant element and let the rest of the styling support it.
The craftsmanship of the ensemble felt especially fitting for an evening celebrating Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla.
The designers began their creative partnership in 1986 and went on to build one of India’s best-known couture houses. Their work has incorporated traditional techniques including Chikankari, Zardozi, mirror work and Resham embroidery, bringing Indian craftsmanship into contemporary couture.
Their 40th anniversary was therefore more than a milestone on the fashion calendar. It was a celebration of how traditional Indian techniques can continue to evolve while retaining their identity.
The evening also brought several familiar names from Indian fashion and entertainment together. Isha Ambani, Radhika Merchant, Shloka Mehta, Sonam Kapoor and Navya Nanda were among the guests.
Veteran models also returned to the ramp as part of the anniversary celebrations, adding a sense of continuity to the designers’ four-decade journey.

The celebration also marked the opening of Mubarak Baug, the designers’ new flagship destination in South Mumbai.
Located inside the historic Framjee Cawasjee Institute, the space spans around 20,000 square feet. It brings together couture, jewellery, archival pieces, art and craft, turning the flagship into an immersive expression of the designers’ work rather than simply a retail space.
The name Mubarak Baug evokes a “garden of celebration”, making the location particularly appropriate for an anniversary marking 40 years of creative partnership. The space also connects the designers’ archive and craftsmanship with their next chapter in Indian fashion.
The evening offered plenty of competition for the fashion spotlight.
Isha Ambani, Radhika Merchant and Shloka Mehta each brought their own interpretation of festive couture, while Sonam Kapoor and other guests added to the evening’s fashion-heavy atmosphere.
Yet the crimson look had a particularly clear identity.
It did not depend on a mix of bright colours or excessive accessories. Instead, the saree, blouse, jewellery and beauty styling all followed the same visual direction.
That consistency is what gave the outfit its impact.
There is plenty to admire in the ensemble adorn by Nita Ambani, but its biggest lesson may be its restraint.
The crimson base created the drama. Geometric embroidery added texture. The matching blouse brought structure. Diamonds supplied contrast, while the softer hair and makeup kept the overall appearance balanced.
For festive dressing, the red saree remains a timeless choice. But this look shows that the colour does not have to be treated as a starting point for adding more and more embellishment.
Instead, it can be the statement itself.
At an evening dedicated to four decades of Indian couture, that made the crimson ensemble feel particularly fitting. It reflected the grandeur of the occasion while allowing craftsmanship to remain at the heart of the story.
And perhaps that is why the look stayed memorable long after the first photographs appeared: it was glamorous, unmistakably Indian and confident enough to let one colour do the talking.
