India Tests Kusha Missile: How Its Reported 350-Km Shield Could Change Air Defence

A fast-moving threat appears above India’s coastline. Before it gets close to a city or airbase, an interceptor is already racing towards it.

That is the promise behind India’s long-range air-defence programme.
 

On July 23, 2026, the Defence Research and Development Organisation carried out the first flight test of the Kusha missile from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, off the Odisha coast. The Ministry of Defence said the interceptor successfully engaged an electronic target that simulated a high-speed, high-altitude aerial threat.

The trial was a major step, but not proof of a working 350-km shield.

Media reports place the planned engagement band between 150 km and 350 km. The government did not reveal the distance achieved during the maiden test.


What happened during the maiden test?

At APJ Abdul Kalam Island, DRDO used an electronic target to recreate a fast, high-flying aerial threat.

The official statement said the system intercepted the target. It did not identify a physical aircraft, drone or incoming target missile. It also did not disclose the interceptor’s speed, altitude, variant or engagement distance.

That makes this a developmental milestone rather than a declaration of combat readiness.

The Ministry of Defence said the wider system is intended to counter fighter jets, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and large enemy aircraft. It also confirmed that Indian laboratories and industry partners developed its missiles, radars and command-and-control centre.
 

What did the Kusha missile test actually prove?

The trial showed that the programme has entered flight testing and that the interceptor completed the engagement planned for this test.

It did not publicly prove that the full system can intercept a target 350 km away. Nor did it show that every radar, launcher and command component worked together in a production-ready battery.

A modern air-defence system is more than a missile. Radars, launchers and the command centre must work together under different conditions before it can enter service.
 

Where does the 150–350 km figure come from?

The Ministry of Defence described Kusha as operating across a “wide range and altitude envelope,” but did not publish a numerical range.

Hindustan Times, citing officials familiar with the programme, reported an engagement band of 150 km to 350 km. The same report said deployment could take three to four years.

Business Standard has reported a planned three-tier structure: M1 at about 150 km, M2 at roughly 250 km and M3 at around 350–400 km.

These figures describe reported goals, not the distance reached on July 23. The exact range demonstrated during the first trial remains undisclosed.

 


 

How could a 350-km shield change air defence?

Distance creates time.

In principle, engaging a threat farther away gives operators more time to identify it and coordinate a response. It may also leave time for another interception attempt.

A longer-range layer could help defend major cities, airbases, ports and strategic installations by meeting some threats farther from the protected area. Real coverage would depend on radar position, terrain, target altitude and the number of batteries deployed.

Long range does not make a system unbeatable. Low-flying threats can be harder to detect. Small drones can arrive in groups. Jamming can disrupt sensors and communication links.

That is why India needs several defensive layers rather than one “magic shield.”
 

What threats is Kusha designed to counter?

The official release names fighter aircraft, missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and large enemy aircraft.

Large aircraft may include surveillance, command or refuelling platforms. Drones and low-flying missiles may be harder to spot against the ground.

The government has not released detailed results for each target category. Claims that Kusha can already defeat every such threat would go beyond the evidence.
 

Where does it fit in India’s current shield?

India already operates air-defence weapons built for different ranges and roles. These include the Russian S-400 and indigenous systems such as the Akash family.

Short-range weapons protect smaller areas, while medium- and long-range systems add further interception layers.

The Kusha missile could add an indigenous outer layer to this structure.


Is Kusha India’s own S-400?

Kusha and the S-400 serve a similar broad role, but they are at very different stages.

The S-400 is already operational. Kusha is still undergoing development trials.

India signed its original S-400 contract with Russia in October 2018. In March 2026, the Defence Acquisition Council approved the initial requirement for a larger procurement package that included additional S-400 systems.

That approval moves the process forward. It does not mean a final contract has been signed or that new units have arrived.

Kusha may eventually complement imported systems and reduce future dependence on them. It cannot yet be called a proven replacement.

 

Why indigenous defence development matters?

India relies on imported systems for part of its longest-range air defence. A homegrown alternative could improve control over production, repairs and future upgrades.

It could also add another layer to India’s wider defence network. But Kusha must pass more trials before deployment.


Rajnath Singh said the test marked an important milestone and showed India’s ability to develop a long-range surface-to-air system, a capability held by only a small group of countries.

Rajnath Singh also linked the programme to reducing import dependence.

A domestic system may give India more control over maintenance, spare parts and upgrades. Its final operational design is not public.

 

When could it enter service?

Officials quoted by Hindustan Times said deployment may take three to four years. That points to a possible window around 2029 or 2030, but it is not an official induction date.

Before then, the Defence Research and Development Organisation must test different ranges, altitudes and target profiles. The armed forces must also complete user trials.
 

A strong first step, not a finished shield

India’s first Kusha missile trial has moved an ambitious domestic programme into flight testing.

If the system eventually proves its reported 150–350 km envelope, it could strengthen India’s ability to confront aircraft, missiles and drones before they approach critical locations.

But DRDO reported only a successful maiden test. It did not disclose the interception distance or declare the system operational.

The achievement is real. So is the work still ahead.
