At 2:55 AM on September 4, 2026, Sriharikota came alive with the roar of an ISRO rocket. About 19 minutes later, India had another powerful eye looking down at Earth.

 

The GSLV-F17 Rocket successfully launched the 2,367-kg EOS-05 Earth observation satellite and placed it into its intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO). ISRO says EOS-05 is India's first imaging satellite designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit.

GSLV-F17 Rocket Sets a New Payload Milestone

The GSLV-F17 Rocket is the 19th flight of India's Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle. It stands 51.7 metres tall and had a liftoff mass of about 420.5 tonnes.

Its payload, EOS-05, weighs 2,367 kg, making it the heaviest satellite launched by the GSLV to date, according to ISRO Chairman V Narayanan. ISRO's launch records also list GSLV-F17 as the 19th GSLV mission.

 

There is an important distinction here. EOS-05 is not India's heaviest Earth-observation satellite overall. The ISRO-NASA NISAR satellite, launched in 2025, weighs 2,392 kg. The GSLV achievement refers specifically to the heaviest payload carried by this launch vehicle.

Unlike many Earth-observation satellites that operate in lower orbits, EOS-05 has been designed to operate from a geosynchronous orbit, eventually at around 36,000 km above Earth.

V Narayanan confirmed after the launch that the satellite was in good health, with its solar panel deployed, while noting that the orbit would subsequently be raised to the required position.

The ISRO satellite launch is therefore an important beginning, rather than the end of EOS-05's journey.
